Gravity Car in Plaza

....

Mill Valley City Officials, the Rotary Club and Historical Society invite members of the community to a Dedication Ceremony at 2:00 pm in the Depot Plaza, Saturday, August 25, 2012.

The ceremony will dedicate two historic features on the Plaza – the Depot Building with restored Northwestern Pacific Railroad Medallions and a historic plaque, and the Gravity Car replica, constructed in 1990 and moved to the Plaza in 2009.

Mayor Garry Lion will read proclamations dedicating the two historic features and acknowledge members of Mill Valley Rotary Club, local businesses, and other volunteers who contributed to these historic projects. Crookedest Railroad Historian Fred Runner will also provide an update on efforts to return one of the original locomotives to the top of Mount Tamalpais. Interested parties should meet at the west end of the Depot Café and Bookstore for the beginning of the ceremony. A Concert on the Plaza hosted by the Mill Valley Art Commission will follow the ceremony at 3:00 pm.

About the Gravity Car: The Gravity Car is a unique rail car that ran from the top of Mount Tamalpais to Muir Woods or the Mill Valley Depot in the early 20th century. From 1896 to 1929, the open-air flatcars with benches were pushed by locomotive to the mountain top, and then released for the 8 mile roller coaster ride down the "Crookedest Railroad in the World." The gravity car replica was built by a team of community volunteers led by the Mill Valley City Council in 1990.

About the Depot Building: The current Depot Building was constructed by Northwestern Pacific Railroad in 1928 as the terminal for the electric and oil trains from Mill Valley to the Sausalito ferry docks. When the railroad ceased operation in the 1940’s, it became the depot for Greyhound bus operations and subsequently Golden Gate Transit. Today the building is owned by the City of Mill Valley and houses the Depot Café & Bookstore and the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce.
