Downtown Project Construction Update - March 22, 2023

Downtown Project

Phase 3 of the Downtown Project involves removing and replacing concrete sidewalks, installing ADA curb ramps, widening the median island at Lytton Square to improve the health of the existing redwood trees, widening the sidewalk on Miller Avenue, and paving Throckmorton from Corte Madera Avenue to Old Mill School and Miller from Sunnyside Avenue to Throckmorton Avenue.

Project Construction Information signs will be posted at the project limits.

Residents and Businesses will be notified two weeks in advance of any sidewalk concrete replacement in front of their business and the temporary pedestrian detour routes.

Restricted free parking signs will be posted on Throckmorton Avenue from Corte Madera Avenue to Madrona Street and Miller Ave from Sunnyside Avenue to Throckmorton Avenue, however a 2 Hour Max time limit shall still be observed.

The estimated completion is June 2023.

Recent storms have affected construction, but the team has been able to successfully complete the following demolition and concrete work:

  • Lytton Square median island, curb and gutter and crosswalk passageway.
  • Modified passageway for the Sunnyside and Miller Ave crosswalk to accommodate the new travel pattern.
  • New pedestrian bulb out at Throckmorton and Bernard. 
  • New curb ramp at the Depot Plaza

What Is Happening: March 23rd Through April 5th:

Interstate Paving and Grading Inc. will work on:

  • Southeast corner of Miller and Throckmorton demo, install storm drain, and manhole, replace sidewalk, and add new pedestrian bulb out. 
  • Add decomposed granite and rock bench to the Lytton Square median. 
  • Relocate granite rocks from the Lytton Square Median to Old Mill Park to help provide adequate space, air and irrigation opportunities to the redwood tree roots.  New benches with standard legs will be installed as part of the project .
  • Modify the storm drain adjacent to Equator Coffee

Downtown Parking and Traffic During Construction

Temporary No Parking Signs will be posted around the construction area to allow the contractor to complete their work.Depending on the construction activities, free parking signs will be posted at some locations on Throckmorton Avenue and on Miller Ave. 2 Hour Max time limits will still be in effect.

Updates will be posted as more information becomes available. Work progression is weather dependent.

City and Construction Management staff continue to mitigate construction impacts and are collaborating with the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce to coordinate and notify local businesses of the planned work. The project team is available to answer questions and review concerns.
