Why are laws about dogs in public areas and leash laws important?

Watching your dog run free and just “be a dog” is hard to resist, we know.

Laws about dogs in public areas and leash laws are not put in place to punish dog owners, but rather to help prevent bad things from happening as a result of dogs running free.

These Laws Help To:

  • Protect wildlife
  • Help those who are afraid of dogs
  • Protect other dogs
  • Keep your dog safe
  • Enable public areas to stay dog friendly
  • Protect the condition of athletic fields

Mill Valley’s Laws Regarding Dogs in Public Areas:

  • All dogs must be on leash in any public park, school grounds, commercial district, public steps lanes and paths.
  • An expansion type leash may be used provided it can be contracted to a length of no more than 6 feet.
  • No dog is permitted on a City or school athletic field at any time unless within an assigned viewing area for the duration of an event.
