FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Tuesday, July 11, 2023 the Southern Marin Fire Protection District hosted a consolidation ceremony and ribbon cutting event at Fire Station #6 in the City of Mill Valley. The anticipated event celebrated the consolidation of the Mill Valley Fire Department with the Southern Marin Fire Protection District.
Members from the public, City of Mill Valley Council, Southern Marin Fire District Board of Directors and personnel from Southern Marin Protection District came out to support the historic event. Speeches from Southern Marin Fire Protection District’s Fire Chief Chris Tubbs, City of Mill Valley’s Mayor Jim Wickham, Southern Marin Fire District’s Board President Christine DeBerry, and Mill Valley Fire Department’s Association President Steve Morlock included the “Better Together” model that has been woven throughout the merger which proved one more time that consolidation is safer for our firefighters, improves service to the public, and provides a good governance model.
“I am proud of our accomplishments surrounding the consolidated fire services between Mill Valley and Southern Marin Fire Protection District. Many said it was impossible, we should stop trying, and some said we wouldn’t get there, but we stand tall today with a realized goal.” said Fire Chief Chris Tubbs. “The best of SMFD starts with its people in Operations, Fire Prevention, and Administration. You make us the best we can be daily as you serve our community. Thank you for your dedication and service.”
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon cutting and traditional water tender salute which consisted of transferring of water between the pump of Mill Valley Fire Department’s Engine 6 and the pump of Southern Marin Fire District’s Engine 4 symbolizing the mark of consolidation and the notion to move forward as a unified front serving the District’s region together.
